Area Description
The quiet town of Richmond, is home to several new developments, including the popular Kings Grant. Located a few minutes south-west of Stittsville, east of Munster and north of the village of North Gower, Richmond is one of Ottawa south’s most fashionable communities.
Richmond was established in 1818 as a military settlement, on the Jock River, a small tributary of the Rideau River. It was incorporated as a village in 1850 and annexed by Goulbourn Township in 1974. Since 2001, it has been considered a suburb within the City of Ottawa.
There are many beautiful historical buildings that have been well maintained, such as St. Philip's Church, the oldest church in the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa. Plenty of scenic views and room to roam make Richmond an outdoor enthusiast haven. Sports associations in Richmond include soccer, softball, curling, ice hockey, and euchre, among others.
The Rideau Trail runs through Richmond providing walking, cycling and ski trails. The waterway also provides plenty of recreational opportunities and beautiful sunsets as well. There are many schools in this family oriented area, with the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board providing an elementary school named St. Philip, and a secondary school in the neighbouring town of Stittsville.
The public Ottawa-Carleton District School Board offers an elementary school and a high school named South Carleton High School.
With plenty of amenities, Richmond is generally self sustaining. The town's main shopping centre is called the Richmond Plaza; home to stores such as Value Mart, LCBO, Home Hardware, and Dollarrific. There are two movie rental outlets, and much more. Kanata is just a ten minute commute via highways 416 and 417, while Ottawa's downtown core is approximately 30 minutes away. No public transport is available in this area.
